Out of the Darkness is a highly accessible and powerful new composition by Julian Marshall. The work originated from the poem ‘Aus dem Dunkel’ by Gertrude Kolmar, the remarkable German Jewish poet who was killed in Auschwitz in 1943. It takes the form of a cantata for chamber choir, solo mezzo-soprano and two solo cellos. The emotive first half of the programme includes the ‘Kyrie’ and ‘Agnus Dei’ from Byrd’s 4-Part Mass, Pärt’s atmospheric ‘Speigel im Spiegel’ and two movements from Ligeti’s ‘Sonata for solo cello, which sets the scene for the main work. As part of the duo Marshall Hain, Julian enjoyed international fame in 1978 with the hit single ‘Dancing in the City’, which sold millions and he is now a highly-respected composer, tutor and mentor in his own right.
